Rubber and Palm Oil Prices Improve. Similarly, good news for the people who make a living as palm oil farmers has slowly but surely started putting a smile on their faces. To some extent, just a few weeks ago the rubber price was priced at only Rp 5,000 for every kilogram, yet for almost a week now, the selling price was broken through Rp 6,000 to Rp 7,000 per kilogram.  Similarly, the selling price of palm oil nearly reached Rp 2,000 per kilogram, whereas in previous weeks it was still stuck at a little more than Rp 1,000.  Eben, one of the rubber farmers from Bandar Petalangan District, started showing his true nature, always smiling broadly. Yet, before the rubber prices went up, the father of three had trouble meeting his household needs. Eben even did prostrations of gratitude for the improved rubber prices, one of the livelihoods he has had for the past dozen years.  `Alhamdulillah has started to show a price increase graphic on rubber at the level of small-time brokers. Usually, once I harvest (tap) this rubber I can only collect around Rp 200,000 to Rp 300,000. Yet, the selling price this week had an increase to around Rp 400,000 and Rp 500,000. This means that buying rice is now at a safe level or is covered by the increased prices,” said Eben, a resident of RT 04, Lubuk Terap Village, on Thursday (14/4).  Eben added that with the prices of basic goods that had already climbed with the low commodity prices for rubber and palm oil, people were really complaining and had to be smart to find a way around the current high cost of living. Ideally, rubber prices are at Rp 10,000 per kilogram and palm oil around Rp 2,500 per kilogram, then Eben and the palm oil farmers will certainly always smile happily.  Aguspuri Tampaludin, a palm oil farmer, also diligently started taking care of his two-hectare oil palm plantation, due to the selling price starting to go up. Usually, with the low selling prices, he was not able to buy fertilizer and other living necessities. He hoped that the prices continue to rise or at least can hold steady at the level of Rp 2,000 per kilogram.  `If the palm oil prices are below a thousand, then the plantation most definitely will not be cared for, because fertilizer is expensive. Hopefully the prices will gradually improve and living necessities can continue to be met,” said Tampal, who has two children. ***

PALM OIL: Wilmar commits to tackling illegal supplies. Wilmar’s official statement declares the landscape approach as the best solution because it involves collaboration with local government. The company also states that addressing deforestation and illegality issues requires a collective effort from all stakeholders.
 
`Including the government and civil society,` Wilmar said in their statement responding to the latest report by Eyes on the Forest (EoF) as quoted on Monday (18/4/2016).
 
Wilmar will also reconnect with CPO suppliers mentioned in the report in order to reaffirm Wilmar’s regulations on illegality. They will also conduct field audits.
 
Previously, the Eyes on the Forest (EoF) investigation report discovered how four global palm oil companies operating in Sumatra allegedly did business in the country’s illegal areas.
 
EoF discovered an illegal fresh fruit bunch (FFB) transport truck travelled as far as 128 km over a period of 5 days, far enough to reach tens of CPO factories. 
 
The result of the analysis discovered almost all CPO factories in Sumatra are at risk of purchasing illegal palm oil or oil contaminated with deforestation.

Just two days into the exhibition, Indonesian coffee generates 18 million dollars in transactions. `This transaction is a concrete result from our attempt to promote the export of Indonesian coffee commodities to the US. The good quality of the coffee from several suppliers is expected to secure a long-lasting business relationship with their partners in the US,` said Nus Nuzulia Ishak, the Director General for National Export Development (PEN) of the Trade Ministry, in a press release received on Sunday.  Up to the 2nd day of the Expo held on 14-17 April 2016, Indonesia has successfully signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for coffee purchase worth US$18 million for 200 containers between members of the Indonesian Specialty Coffee Association (AKSI) and Royal Coffee Inc. California and New York.  Nus added that the transaction is expected to continue increasing until the end of the expo at the 28th SCAA Expo that was officially opened on last Friday (14/4).  At the expo, Trade Minister Thomas Lembong greeted the participants and visitors of the expo via video, right after the announcement about Indonesia as the Portrait Country of 28th SCAA by SCAA Symposium Senior Director Peter Giuliano.  Additionally, several statements from prominent figures and players in the coffee industry in the US about Indonesian coffee were also presented via video that inspired `A Tribute to Indonesia.` One of the coffee legends who created the term specialty coffee and SCAA founder, Erna Knutsen, stated that she was greatly inspired by Sumatran coffee.  `This shows that indeed Indonesian specialty coffee is highly valued for its richness and diversity by the US coffee community,` Nus said.  Nus as the Head of Indonesian Delegation officially opened the Indonesian Pavilion under the theme `Remarkable Indonesian Coffee: Home of the Worlds Finest Coffee.` Indonesia greeted the audience with various servings of Indonesian traditional snacks, such as candies and cookies that became visitor favorites.  In addition, cultural serving was also performed by House of Angklung from Washington D.C., as well as coffee cupping for selected specialty coffee, to further introduce and promote the diversity in Indonesian specialty coffee.

We will ask the Minister for an explanation,` said Vice Chairman of House of Representatives Commission IV Herman Khaeron in Jakarta, on Tuesday. According to Herman, if the implementation of IPOP causes many problems in the field, then the government should prohibit it and the Ministry of Agriculture should take firm action.  `We will back up that. Our concern is the farmers who are greater in number,` he said. According to him, the environmental standards implemented by the IPOP are too high for farmers to follow. If the farmers cannot follow the standardization created by the IPOP, then it is certain that the price of farmer's fresh fruit bunch (TBS) will be hard to sell because almost all the national palm oil trading is controlled by companies that have signed the commitment. `This condition will be very dangerous for the farmers. The government and palm oil business operators in Indonesia should just base themselves on the standardization that is owned by the Indonesian government, namely Indonesia Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO),` he said. Moreover, the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) stated that the IPOP has the potential to become a means of cartel. `If that is true. This is very dangerous. PTPN XI Strategy Reduces Sugar Mill Number. PTPN XI Planning and Development Director Aris Toharisman said that his party will fix some factories using the company’s capital. In the future, the capacity of PG and efficiency will be increased.
“The consequence is that the number of PG will decrease. But, its capacity will increase. This large capacity can finally increase efficiency,” explained Aris, on Sunday (April 20) yesterday.
According to him, if the PG capacity is small, the investment and maintenance costs are not much different from the large-scale PG. It is planned that by 2019, the number of PG in PTPN XI will be nine units from 16 units now.
Aris gave an example of the increasing capacity of the PG Asembagus dan Jatiroto, costing PMN funds of Rp 650 billion. The funds of more than half a trillion rupiah will later be divided into Rp 250 billion for PG Asembagus and Rp 400 billion for PG Jatiroto.
“Actually, these funds are not enough. This is because our requirements for those two factories are around Rp 1.7 trillion,” said Aris. Although, he said, PTPN XI’s profit last year was only Rp 118 billion. (res)
