World Bank raises 2016 oil price forecast. In its latest "Commodity Markets Outlook," the Washington-based global lender raised its crude oil price forecast for this year to US$41 per barrel, from its January projection of US$37 per barrel. The upward revision in oil price projections reflects improving market sentiment and a weakening U.S. dollar, and the World Bank also expects a smaller supply overhang. "We expect modestly higher prices for energy commodities over the course of the year, as markets rebalance after a period of oversupply," Xinhua quoted John Baffes, lead author of the report, as saying. "However, energy prices could fall further if OPEC were to significantly increase production and non-OPEC production does not decline as fast as we expect." Oil prices have rebounded from US$25 per barrel in mid-January to more than US$40 per barrel in April, supported by supply disruptions in Iraq and Nigeria, and falling non-OPEC production, mostly of U.S. shale oil. Despite the upward revision, the World Bank said oil prices are still expected to average lower than last year. Energy prices, including oil, natural gas and coal, are forecast to fall by an annual 19.3 percent this year, the World Bank said, which is much smaller than its January forecast of a 24.7 percent decline. Persistent high inventories and weak growth prospects in emerging and developing economies are key factors keeping energy prices lower than last year, the World Bank said. The World Bank cut its forecast for agricultural prices, as it sees 2016 as another bumper harvest year for most grains and oilseeds. The bank expects agricultural prices to fall 4.0 percent this year.  Metal prices are projected to decline by 8.2 percent this year, less than the bank’s January forecast of a 10.2 percent drop. The upgrade reflects expectations of robust demand growth from China, the World Bank said.  (Uu.A026)

Hartono said that his factory in the Tangerang Gajah Tunggal Industrial Area is currently capable of producing conveyor belts with a production capacity of 480 thousand meters per month. Of the total production, he continued, utilization by domestic industries has only reached 30-40 percent per year or around 100 thousand meters. According to Hartono, conveyor belt products from China, Korea and India are still the choices of a number of domestic industries to run their businesses. Sinar Mas Palm Farmers Receive IDR 10 Billion Grant. Managing Director of BPDPKS, Bayu Krisnamurthi, stated that the replanting assistance was given to 200 palm oil farmers partnered with Sinar Mas, who are members of Koperasi Sawit Mandian Jaya, at Rp 10 billion.

The bank involved in the oil palm replanting of Koperasi Sawit Mandian Jaya is BRI Agro.
Bayu explained that Asian Agri and Sinar Mas were chosen as targets for BPDPKS's replanting programas because they met the specified requirements. `They have filed an application and have completed all requirements,` said Bayu.
Following these two projects, there are seven other projects currently in their final stage. `Around 20 other projects are in the administrative completion process,` said Bayu.

Bayu said, rejuvenating oil palm trees that are 25 years old is very important considering that palm oil has been able to provide prosperity for farmers and the people, in addition to providing very large non-oil and gas foreign exchange. According to him, the old age of oil palm trees has resulted in low productivity so that they must be replaced as soon as possible if we do not want welfare to decline and lose foreign exchange from the plantation sector. `Oil palm is a leading sector that generates the largest foreign exchange for the national economy. However, trees that are over 25 years old need to be rejuvenated to ensure productivity in accordance with industrial needs, the sustainability of the palm oil industry and to improve the welfare of farmers and the community,` said Bayu. It was said, during 2016 there were seven projects in 4,200 hectares of oil palm plantations ready for rejuvenation, most of which are located in South Sumatra and Riau. . To rejuvenate oil palm trees, he said, BPDP is working with local governments, private parties, NGOs, banks and universities which also help manage sustainable oil palm plantations. Asian Agri Managing Director Kelvin Tio said the company and plasma farmers will continue to implement the oil palm rejuvenation program. He said, the partnership between companies, government, and communities has become a good model for the palm oil industry, considering that they have the same goal, namely to improve the welfare of farmers.

Secretary General at Gerbang Tani Idham Arsyad said that the moratorium effort toward oil palm and mining plantation permits was a strategic step which deserved support. He added that both sectors had caused various problems, such as environmental damage, poverty, and agraria conflicts. Nonetheless, Idham stated that another thing that had to be done was to review the existing permits. “Not only [an] oil palm and mining permit moratorium, but a review on existing permits is also necessary,” he said on Tuesday (4/19/2016) in Jakarta. He also stressed the necessity to further involve community figures in the moratorium supervision. Idham added that this is because there were allegedly many loopholes that could be used by certain parties that caused deforestation to take place.
