PTPN's Strategy to Boost Tea Production. President Director of PTPN III Elia Massa Manik said that PTPN has a 1.18 million-hectare land in Indonesia. Out of that total area, 833 thousand hectares is used to plant various commodities. The rest are used for infrastructure such as roads and offices. The largest planted commodity is oil palm, followed by rubber, sugar cane, tea, and others. The company will boost the production of its tea commodity which has a good potential. According to him, the national tea production is 130 thousand tons per year. And 70 percent of that amount is produced in West Java. Out of the 130 thousand tons, 50 percent is produced by PTPN. `One of the things that we have to improve is product quality. Many of our tea factories are old,` Elia said at the Launching of PT Perkebunan Nusantara III's Re-design Leadership Development Program in the Plantation Education Institution (LPP) Yogyakarta, Monday (9/1/2017). Director of Human Capital of PTPN III (Persero), Seger Budiharjo, said that PTPN also conducted a mapping of its assets in order to develop and utilize them to their maximum potential. Many of PTPN's assets are now located in the middle of cities, especially those in Java, therefore the utilization of these assets must be reconsidered. `We will maximize the assets, the first step for us now is to map which ones are suitable to be developed,` said Seger Budiharjo. PTPN's total planted area is 817.536 hectares, consisting of oil palm, rubber, sugar cane, tea, coffee, cocoa, tobacco, wood, and horticulture. Oil palm and sugar production has increased in the period of 2013-2015. On the other hand, tea and sugar production has decreased in the same period. Production of oil palm (oil and palm kernel), rubber, tea, and sugar in 2015 are 3.4 million tons, 184.38 thousand tons, 1.1 million tons, and 45 thousand tons respectively. April 2017 CPO futures contract, the most active contract on Bursa Malaysia, opened today with a gain of 0.10% or 3 points at the position of 3,113 ringgit per ton. Its movement then rose by 0.51% or 16 points to 3,126 ringgit per ton at 10.06 WIB. According to Malaysian plantation consultant Ganling, as reported by Bloomberg today, the effect of El Nino last year on palm oil production in Malaysia and Indonesia, the two largest producers in the world, will continue until the first half of 2017. `Production will fall again in the first quarter in Malaysia and between the second and third quarters in Indonesia. The continued tight supply will limit the rise in stock so as to support the price at least until the first quarter,` Ganling's director, Ling Ah Hong, said. On trading Monday (16/1), the CPO price closed with a gain of 0.88% or 27 points at 3,110 ringgit per ton along with the weakening performance of the ringgit. The rupiah's exchange rate this morning again weakened slightly by 0.03% to 4.4680 per US dollar at 09.46 WIB, after it had strengthened to a position of 4.4657. PTPN Subsidiary Company Implements Four Strategies to Promote Indonesian Tea in 2017. KPBN is the largest auction operator for tea in terms of volume and sales transaction value in Indonesia. At the present, the tea being auctioned at KPBN is tea produced by PTPN, namely CTC and Orthodox. KPBN’s Director President; Iriana Ekasari said that, KPBN will cooperate with other plantation producers so they can join selling their tea at KPBN.
`Presently, KPBN is the market place with the infrastructure in Indonesia most ready for selling Indonesian commodity products. We are preparing ourselves for other tea producers to use the existing infrastructure facilities at KPBN as a venue to sell their tea commodities,` said Iriana in a press release in Jakarta on Wednesday (January 4, 2016).Iriana mentioned that there are four strategies enforced by KPBN. They are: implementing business plan integration with the existing buyers.According to her, the buyers are prepared for increasing their purchasing capacity. Namely, they must increase the number of buyer overseas, increase their financial capabilities, and increase the storage capacity.`Secondly, KPBN will be carrying out supply integration with the plantations to ensure the availability of goods and quality consistency,` she explained.Thirdly, the enforcement of auction that is more transparent by displaying unggulan products to every buyer, particularly for plantations which have improved their quality.Fourthly, facilitating supply chain financing with banks for buyers registered at KPBN so they can buy tea at KPBN.`To increase the number of buyers, KPBN will carry out marketing activities more aggressively and right on target such as holding exhibitions both domestically and abroad. KPBN will also build a love for quality tea from plantations in Indonesia among domestic consumers,` she explained.Just for your information, several major companies included in the Jakarta Tea Buyer Association (JTBA), are regular buyers of tea commodities at KPBN. 60 percent of tea commodities from KPBN are sold domestically.As for abroad, buyers export tea to Malaysia, United States (AS), Poland, Pakistan, England, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Russia, Netherlands, and many others.`In 2016, KPBN sold tea amounting to USD56.1 million. The sales volume for 2017 is planned to increase by 25 percent from 2016, mainly targeted at the export market,` she concluded.

President Director of PT KPBN Iriana Ekasari said, the development of the domestic tea market is difficult to do since consumers are familiar with tea with quality grades one and two. As a result, the price of tea with the primary grade is depressed. Only in the export market is tea with the primary grade still valued. `So PTPN must improve the quality of their tea so that it can exist in a market that values tea with superior quality,` Iriana said, Wednesday (4/1).
One way is to increase fertilizing and processing tea with quality technology. The commitment of PTPN to improve the grade of tea that is produced encourages KPBN to boldly target an increase in tea sales of 25% this year. `It means that there is an additional tea sales volume this year of at least 9,000 tons, particularly in the export market,` Iriana said.
In 2016, the total sales of KPBN tea achieved 36,000 tons. If it increases by 25%, then the tea sales target this year is at least 45,000 tons. Thus far, KPBN has still relied on the domestic market to sell the tea production of PTPN of 60%. The remainder is for the export market such as Russia, America, Malaysia, and several countries in Europe.

2017 KPBN Will be Focusing on Tea Export Sales. Iriana Ekasari, Director of KPBN, admitted that since 2008 the competitiveness of Indonesian tea has declined compared to Russia, England, the United States and other countries. In 2008, tea exports still accounted for 70% of all tea products in PTPN traded through KPBN. However, in only 8 years, exports had dropped to only a third of that amount. This decline was caused by the weakening of Indonesia’s market control over tea prices in the global market. Then, there was a decrease in tea auction activities abroad and a decline in the quality of Indonesian tea. In the domestic market, the price of tea sold by KPBN was priced at Rp18,944/kg, whereas in the export market, Indonesian tea was priced at Rp23,155/kg, 22.5% higher than the local price. “The Indonesian market is filled with grade 2 tea, because the Indonesian market is not yet able to value the price of grade 1 tea. As for grade 1 tea, we export it because overseas markets are willing to value the price of grade 1 tea,” said Iriana. That is why this year KPBN will focus on exploring export markets. Last year, 27% of the tea traded by KPBN was exported to Malaysia. However, Iriana confirmed that this year she will focus on export destinations where Indonesian tea exports were once glorious, such as Russia, Pakistan, America, Germany, England, and Poland. Today, KPBN held the first tea auction in 2017. Currently, the tea being auctioned by KPBN is tea that is produced from PTPN, namely the CTC and Orthodox. A total of 24 foreign companies are taking part in today’s tea auction. The tea auction will be held once a week, every Wednesday. In the future, KPBN will cooperate with other plantation producers to sell their tea through KPBN.
