BPS: If Sugar Prices Keep Rising, Government Should Import
Looking at these conditions, the government must take fast action by way of an import.
"If later the price continues to rise, then that must be covered by import," said Sasmito Hadi Wibowo, Deputy of the BPS Distribution and Service Statistic Division, at his office, Jakarta, Wednesday (1/6).
The supply of sugar must be increased to meet community needs. Especially in the lead-up to the fasting month and Eid al-Fitr. Wherein the demand for sugar increases significantly.
There is a high chance of price reduction after the import is done. Although that is also influenced by the price of sugar overseas.
"If the import price overseas is cheap, then of course it can decrease. If the price overseas is not competitive, then it will be difficult, right? " he explained.
While for an increase in domestic production, Sasmito seems to doubt that it will be successful in the near future. Because it takes about six months to produce sugar from sugarcane,
"Production generally depends on sugarcane, sugarcane has a long lifespan, 6 months. So it cannot be planted and then harvested right away," said Sasmito. (dtf)
