House members question government’s plan to import sugar

"The government should calculate domestic granulated sugar requirements, domestic granulated sugar production and the shortfall ahead of time," said Abdul Halim at the MPR/DPR/DPD RI building in Jakarta,
Wednesday.

According to Halim, after an assessment is conducted and the shortfall is known, the government can import raw sugar but only after domestic sugar production is sold to the National Logistics Agency (Bulog).

If the government does not import raw sugar carefully, he said, it could kill sugarcane farmers who sell their production to sugarcane processing plants.
