OPEC to hold informal meeting in Algeria next week

Al-Sada, OPEC's current president, said the meeting will take place on the sidelines of the 15th International Energy Forum next Wednesday, a news release from the Ministry of Energy and Industry said on Wednesday.

OPEC Secretary General Mohammed Barkindo was quoted as saying that the meeting in Algeria this month of OPEC and non-OPEC oil producers would be an informal gathering for consultations not decision-making.

Barkindo said that OPEC would try to reach a consensus and convene an extraordinary meeting to make binding decisions when all members agree.

He said that the group will review the year-old deal, but he did not specify whether they will discuss a production freeze pact.

The 15th International Energy Forum, a biennial event for energy ministers, is due to be held in Algiers from September 26 to 28.
